Psychological and physical violence is an ever-present debilitating occurrence.

Bulletproof Bench

The event that inspired this object is the massacre at Tiananmen Square, China in 1989. The form of the bench is an abstraction of a defensive shield. The material is Kevlar, a lightweight bulletproof fabric many times the strength of steel lb/lb. I never imagined that bulletproof consumer products would no longer be ironic.

This piece was fabricated in 1999.

I developed a line of products that raise awareness of the random acts of violence that occur everyday. The intent was to develop a symbolic and ironic set of objects that addressed the state of affairs in our violent world.
